Krayt Dragon vs Dewback Patrol by Robert-Shane Krayt Dragon vs Dewback Patrol by Robert-Shane
If you’ve seen the first Star Wars movie (A New Hope) you might remember the scene with the Sandtroopers searching the desert of Tatooine for C-3PO and R2-D2. I thought it would be cool to imagine what it might look like if they also found a Krayt Dragon!

I tried to convey some drama in this picture – with the Krayt slamming the Dewback to the ground – but intentionally left it ambiguous enough that you can’t tell which way the battle will finish.

Perhaps the Imperials encountered the Krayt shortly after they arrived – and were able to take it down successfully and get back to their job? Or perhaps they’d already found the evidence of the droids and were on their way back to base when the Krayt attacked as some kind of act of cosmic karma?! I’ll leave it to you the viewer to decide.

We don’t get to see a Krayt Dragon in the film - other than a skeleton of one which C-3PO walks by - but the ‘expanded universe’ of stories adds some flesh to those bones. There are various depictions of the Krayt – but I wanted mine to look like a natural enemy of the Dewback which the Imperials ride on. I thought it should look ‘dragon-like’ - as the name suggests - and I also gave it aspects of a crocodile as I wanted it to look like a sturdy and powerful predator.

This is an entirely original depiction of George Lucas’s characters and was drawn in pencil first, the scanned and coloured in Photoshop using a Wacom pad. This is a compressed version of the original which is 600dpi.

Hope you like!

I like this. The Krayt's head reminds me of Gamera, the giant Japanese monster turtle. You succeeded in making the dragon truly look like a powerful predator.

Amazing. The art is beautiful but its the thought and like you mention below the ambiguity of the pieces that stun me. I personally enjoy when my mind is invited to develop a ending to this iconic moment in time where truly anything can happen.

The poised Krayt does appear to have startled the Stormtroopers but they seem to be determined to fight no matter what the outcome. Thanks for sharing your gift with us.

You really have a gift to draw stromtroopers facing monsters ! Please let me see a picture of them, standing as victors against a monster of your choice (but please, something credible, not Jawas, for example !) Great work !

Thank you very much - i appreciate the encouragement! I may yet do something where the stormtroopers dont all look like their all about to be killed somehow. They're my fav characters so i am on their side! i just think that for the purpose of these pictures - which is to showcase my artistic abilities - its interesting to create some ambiguity and allow the viewer to use their own imagination to decide what happens next. If a Krayt dragon fan looks at this - i'm sure he'd want the stormtroopers to all be eaten or run away screaming!

lol, indeed ! I admit that it's hard to satisfy everyone (either stormtroopers fans or Dragons Krayt's fans). But seeing in the comics how stormtroopers are beaten, which i found injust, I would like to see for once an heroic stormtrooper squad kicking ass to rebels or monsters, or, why not, those arrogants brawlers from Rogue Squadron ! In the novels, they are really irritating !
But surely you know how to draw, I don't, so congratulations again !

Cool pic man!
Also "Old Ben" was used to dealing with clone troopers made from a Fett that actually were competent soldiers. Once the Empire started normal recruiting the quality of soldier in the armor dropped! These troops would just be a light snack for the dragon.

I think you're right - the quality of Troopers serving the Empire wasn't all that. But the randomness of Stormtroopers means I can dream of being a Stormtrooper - but never a Clone Trooper!

Would you really want to be a Clone Trooper though? No free will, very little individuality, very few of them had any creativity, and 99% of the had Order 66 coded into their DNA. The few that DID show individuality or creativity such as those in the Republic Commando Squad or the Arch Troopers were either closer to Fett's actual DNA or "damaged" in the brain as far as the cloners were concerned since they didn't respond to the "genetic order" chain of command and thought for themselves.

I'm sorry but not all of that is true.Clones are known for their creativity with their armor and battle tactics Also, their DNA was not coded with order 66.Clones are engineered to listen to their highest superior and that is Palpatine. Why do you think the Kaminoans built another army to rebel the too loyal clones. To me, I would be a clone because my superiors actually value my life, while if I was a storm my superiors would be jetting off to safety ,leaving us storms to get overrun with rebels and don't even give a care about what happens to us as long as their ok.

The reason I was saying that Order 66 was in their DNA was based off of part of the information about the origins of the clone army in the book Darth Pelagius. It tell the story of Palpatine's master and Palpatine and how his master was looking to clone an army of soldiers that would obey the Sith at all times. He wanted them to be loyal to the Sith only and be resistant to Jedi manipulation. The species that Pelagius wanted to use didn't work so human DNA was used but the idea of total loyalty remained. Palpatine added Order 66 was supposedly a "last resort" option in the event that the Jedi rebelled from the Senates or Palpatine's control and tried to overthrow the government. By attacking Palpatine to arrest him like they did and failing to do so it opened the door for a full scale use of that option.
I agree a clone is better than a storm but only ones like you find in the game and books Star Wars Republic Commando where either they have taken some type of damage or their cloning process was off and they don't follow orders like they should. They tend to think and act more independently than any other clones baring the ARC Troopers.

You've pretty much summed up exactly why I wouldn't want to be a Clone Trooper - but I still like the idea of being a Stormtrooper! :)

Ah, but then you would be stuck in bright whit laser and light saber attractive armor. Unless your family came from money you wouldn't get the advanced training OR the quality equipment that you needed to face your opponents or a choice assignment posting. You would end up as cannon fodder or krayt dragon food!

You're right of course - they should be able to hit it - but I wonder if Krayt dragons have blaster-proof skin? And we know that their weaponry isn't all that reliable! so they could still be in for a hard time
