Star Wars 7 - Boba's Back by Robert-Shane Star Wars 7 - Boba's Back by Robert-Shane
Boba Fett was always one of my favorite Star Wars characters (despite me killing him in my 'Predator kills the Star Wars universe' picture). So it always really bugged me that he got taken out in Return of the Jedi in such a slapstick way.

Evidently I wasn't alone in my dissatisfaction with the idea that a temporarily blind Han Solo could do away with the galaxy's greatest bounty hunter without even realizing it - because almost immediately the 'expanded universe' of stories revealed that Boba did in fact escape the Sarlacc. I'm certainly not the first to try to depict the scene of how Boba might have emerged from the Sarlacc's pit - but I did want to make my version different from the others that you might have already seen.

I'm no expert on how the Sarlacc's digestive system works - but we heard something in the movie about it taking a thousand years to digest its victims. So perhaps it has some kind of way of putting its 'food' into suspended animation so it can eat it slowly whenever it needs to?

My idea for this scene is that it's now thirty years after being knocked into the Sarlacc and Fett has only just emerged. The Sarlacc's stomach acid has been wearing away at him all this time - leading to the added corrosion and cracks I've drawn - until the acid created a short circuit in Fett's jet pack which ignited the rocket on his pack and killed the Sarlacc - allowing Fett to wake from his stasis and slowly, wearily crawl up out of the burning pit!

...this means that he's emerging just in time to appear in Star Wars Episode 7 - looking to take revenge on Han Solo!!!
(It's a stretch I know - but so is the idea that a person can be digested for a thousand years!)

This was drawn in Photoshop using a Wacom pad. Star Wars and its characters are copyright of Disney - this is fan art and isn't for sale or reproduction.

Hope you like!

Yeah, he managed to tunnel out and, upon discovering the Slave 1 had been compounded he purchased a new ship which he named the Slave 2. He used this ship until the Slave 1 could be retrieved. After escaping the sarlacc he did actually go after Han Solo for revenge, it became his main task.

When I read his escape in the books, I expected a more damaged body: his skin was all black and charred, His armor beginning to melt, the stomach acid was eating into his neck, so his spinal cord could be seen. Yours looks way more realistic. Props to realism.

I think George Lucas wanted to add a scene of Boba escaping the Sarlacc, but for some reason it wasn't added.

if you read all the versions, he actually escaped twice. The first time, it spat him out, Jawas found him and for some reason thought he was a droid. he was put in their landcrawler thing and ended up helping Han solo get something from the land crawler because he'd lost his memory which only returned when Han was about to help him out. The land crawler crashed back into the sarlacc pit. That was in the comics right after the 6th film and then of course later on, boba escaped properly.

This is great. I like how you let us catch glimpses of his face through his damaged helmet. But he emerges 30 years after the events in "Return of the Jedi?" Now that's a truly novel idea. :) (Smile)

There was actually a short story from Fett's POV about his time in the sarlacc, including how he escaped and survived. Apparently, he used a thermal detonator. :XD: I always hated how he died by accident; you do an incredible job of portraying his emergence from death. :)

Thanks very much. And yep - there's been a few different stories created about how Fett gets out of the sarlacc.  He's too good a character to keep down! :)

Flippin sweet!!!!!!
I was so obsessed with the character when I was younger I did read Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, and it is a gratifying feeling seeing something illustrated that had stuck with me for quite some time, years even. It was really engaging to read as a kid a different side to Boba Fett and learn not only did he escape, not only did he kill Jodo Kast, but also...he finally 'got' Han Solo.

This is a great picture and I am glad to add it to my favorites collection *tips hat*

Thanks Dusty. He is a great character - and I always liked the idea of Jodo Kast as a 'wannabe' too - it gave Fett's character even more depth and believability that there would be someone trying to trade off his name.

If you are a Fett fan - check my journal entry as I've included a link to Joe Johnston's Youtube page where you can see his video of him drawing Boba. It's something very special as he's the guy who created the final look of Boba Fett originally!

Interestingly enough, there is a book mini-series about Boba Fett and it centers around the idea that he did crawl out of the Sarlacc pit. I've got a paperback copy at home somewhere but I can't for the life of me remember what the series is titled or who wrote it.

Great drawing though!

Yep - in fact there's been a lot of interpretations of how Fett got out of the Sarlacc Pit. It seems like he's always been seen as too good a character to kill off that easily!

^^ Plus I'm sure a lot of fans were ticked off on how he got "killed off" so easily. After all, he was a formidable opponent.

It's mandalorian iron, specially forged through a secret process that renders it nearly blaster proof and resistant to just about everything else, even glancing blows from lightsabers. Not saying it's invincible but it's a defense to be respected. Sarlacc acid wont do much to it.

Its in several star wars books as well as in the graphic novel called Jango Fett I beleave. It not too obscure, not if you like mandalorians anyway.

Thanks again. I've got the Jango Fett graphic novel (as well as literally hundreds of other Star Wars comics and books) - but haven't read it for years. In fact virtually all of my spare time is taken up with my drawing nowadays and I'm not getting any time for keeping up with my reading. The last thing I bought was the novelisation for the Force Unleashed but I haven't even opened it!

Awesome work! Boba is a badass and Lucas killed the film by killing him off like that.

İ was expecting a good Hunter vs Jedi battle in which Luke is nearly overwhelmed and manages to get lucky enough to get th eupper hand and send Boba plummeting to the Sarlacc with the Force or his lightsaber just before Boba was gonna kill him.

That would be much more awesome.

(sorry for the very sloooooow reply!) ... I know what you mean - I can still remember the first time I saw Jedi and when Boba jetted off to confront Luke on the skiff I thought 'now this is gonna be good!'. No way did I expect the way it turned out and it still seems like a badly judged piece of 'comic relief'. :rage:

Yes ! Boba Fett is back ! I always loved the Mandalorian Warrior and Bounty Hunter ! I also always hated the ridiculous way he fallen on the damned Sarlaac's pit ! Bu the Star Wars' EU made him come back, explaining that the Carkoon could not digest him ; I would rather think Boba Fett made his way into the Sarlaac and fought for surviving, and then managed to escape ! But the picture... epic ! Congratulations ! Sincerely !
