Star Wars - Gamorrean Guard by Robert-Shane Star Wars - Gamorrean Guard by Robert-Shane
Most of my portfolio of Star Wars art features the popular characters like Darth Vader, Boba Fett and Stormtroopers, but I wanted to show that I can also draw the less well-known alien characters. And I thought where better to start than with one of Jabba the Hutt's Gamorrean Guards, aka 'Pig Guards'!

When Return of the Jedi came out in 1983, Dungeons and Dragons was very popular and I think they tapped into that 'swords and sorcery' look with these characters. In the movie, the Gamorrean Guards are brought to life by actors wearing 'fat suits' which must have limited their maneuverability - so I've tried to make my depiction look a little more dynamic and menacing.

This is a compressed version of the original that was drawn in Photoshop using a Wacom pad. Star Wars and its characters are copyright of Disney - this is fan art and isn't for sale or reproduction.

Man, this reminds me of the days when I played Dark Forces and ended up on Jabba the Hutt's starship. Those things would be waiting in the dark for me and every time they appeared it scared the living crap out of me!

Ah, good times! :D

! I completely forgot they were in Dark Forces! I loved that game so much - and, like you, I remember them be scary because they always seemed to be waiting around the corner!

Sweet. You know, every time I see a Gamorrean I'm subconsciously reminded of the Moblins of Zelda [link].

Yep - but these guys came first. :) And of course, they're basically just versions of that 'generic' fantasy character type... the ogre.

Oh yes, but when you're born in 1984 and discovered Star Wars and Zelda somewhere around the same time such concepts do tend to run together. Lol :D

:( poor Gamorrean guards! I guess they weren't very likable - but I think they were at least very well designed :)

Yeah. I'll give them that, at least. I don't think they were meant to be liked, mind. That's what I like about SW- the aliens are so well designed.

My old asshole roommate raised a really good question about these guys: If Luke is meant to be the ultimate archetype for good, why did he use the Force Choke ability on the Gamorrean guards? Force Choke is usually considered pretty evil...

 your roommate does make a good point! And this is an example of Luke using the Force in a way that's inconsistent with the Jedi way. I do remember reading an explanation for this a long time ago - but can't remember where now! I think it was basically because of his unconventional and incomplete training - which meant that he didn't stick strictly to what the traditional idea of a 'Jedi' is (also with his choice of wearing all black).

Maybe he wanted to enter without lightsabre blazing and causing a massive riot. Considering Leia was in the same room, as well as threepio, maybe he thought he might have accidently got his friends hurt in enemy crossfire? He probably wanted to try talking to the vile Hutt first and that was the best way to go about it, rather than having the guards open fire? Some kind of surprise attack? Yes, it is a little weird, but I wonder if Jedi have done that in the past to someone else.

That's what I suggested, but the guy who brought it up was a massive dickhead who wouldn't listen to any other opinions. Though he did raise a good question: why not mind trick them? Choking was probably faster and quieter...

Yeah. I bet Luke didn't really like to have to do that, deep inside. But... they were his enemies after all. Mind trick? Hmm... he could have just made them think it was still nap time, I guess. But that would require him speaking aloud. So the choke wins hands down.
