Star Wars Manga by Robert-Shane Star Wars Manga by Robert-Shane
Here's my idea for a Manga/Anime version of Star Wars.

There was a Star Wars Manga adaptation published in the late '90s - but I wanted my version to look a little 'leaner' - more like the style used for the 'Battle of the Planets' (aka Gatchaman) cartoon or the Studio Ghibli movies.

My aim was to capture a cartoon feel but to also paint realistic textures and detail. I also intentionally gave the characters a stylised look. It was a challenge to get the balance right - but the end result is exactly what I wanted.

This is an entirely original depiction of George Lucas's characters. First drawn in pencil, then inked, scanned and coloured in Photoshop using a Wacom pad. The original is much higher resolution and is over 300mb!

Hope you like!

Robert ,When i look at this art this is great its much better  than the stupid '90's' one by Hisao Tamaki and the other manga version of the empire strikes back and return of the Jedi because if star wars are going to be adapted in manga format they should be drawn studio ghibli style because when i watch star wars and imagine if they are anime they would look ghibli character like, i like it when you give faithfulness to the character like their original movie counterparts though about princess leia's face i thought her feminine face should be similar like the women in studio ghibli the one without red lipstick type lips but since you also influence this art from gatchaman and some female characters in ghibli have red lipsticks as well when they got older i guess i wouldn't criticize on that .

and to tell you the truth i wanted to draw a true star wars manga style fan art in the style of ghibli characters but i didn't feel like making it yet and i didn't have time for it and  i am making a graphic novel as my big break.

So anyway since this your idea for manga design of star wars is so great i am putting it on one of my favorites.  :D

Thanks for liking this.  I tried to make it faithful to the idea of Studio Ghibli - especially for the character of Tarkin who I thought would need to be portrayed in a very extreme, almost inhuman way to emphasise his evilness.  When it came to Princess Leia though - I very much had in mind the image of Princess (Jun) from Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman).

Thanks very much - and yes Tarkin's definitely the 'main' villain in my eyes - why else would they have gone to the trouble and expense to get an actor who at that time was more famous than any of the others (except Sir Alec Guinness). And I just thought that his character and look would lend itself perfectly to the manga style - where older characters are often drawn to look very creepy and sinister!

Well the studio needed a few big names for the film to make it marketable. He is one of those underrated villains.Even though Vader is awesome hes a tragic hero not a villain so Im tired of people calling him the villain. Tarken blew up a planet! If thats not evil then I do not know what is. And yes you got the creepiness down which is perfect since Cushing was a horror film actor.

A lot of anime can be very creepy - even disturbing - so you're right to be cautious! But it is very varied - in Japan comics and cartoons are used to present a wide range of stories - much more so than in the 'west'. If you haven't seen any yet - perhaps look out for stuff by Studio Ghibli - they make consistently amazing stuff! :)

Deranged indeed! I'm no manga expert - but the villains always seem to look mad/strange to me - so that's what I was going for here. Thanks for making me feel that I got it right! :)

Thanks very much! It seems that most people on here are too young to know about Battle of the Planets (and I'm guessing you're too young to remember it too?) but it must have made a big impact on my infant brain because I think Tarkin's character would be a perfect 'scary in a weird way' Anime character!

Glad to hear you understand what I'm getting at with the Battle of the Planets. And don't worry - I keeping hearing that men don't wanna grow up these days - so, as another 30-something, I reckon we've still got plenty of years of looking at comic and space stories left in us! :)

If you've seen any of the Studio Ghibli movies (like Spirited Away) you'll see what I mean. If you haven't seen any - you might like to try. A Japanese animated Star Wars would be amazing!

I think Tarkin's role in the first movie is overlooked a little now - so I wanted to emphasise him in this picture.
I was trying to make him 'weird-scary' - kind of a mixture of the granny character in Spirited Away and Zoltar from Battle of the Planets. I think the result is about right - if a little 'different'! :)

Oh I always think of him as the main villain of the film, not Vader, he's just the henchman. In fact, the Emperor was originally meant to be a puppet ruler, not at all the character he is now, controlled by the governors like Tarkin. Though... Tarkin isn't really maniacal evil, he's cold and uncaring evil, just wants order at any cost. I don't think he gets his jollies from evil like Palpy.

Good point about the Emperor. Early on he's portrayed as scheming and ambitious - but turns out to be evil incarnate! Perhaps that's based on the idea that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely?
I think your reading of Tarkin's character is right too... but he must have got a kick from wiping out Alderaan at the press of a button!
