Star Wars Shock Troopers by Robert-Shane Star Wars Shock Troopers by Robert-Shane
I like the design of the Shock Troopers from Revenge of the Sith... so I thought I'd draw some - and this is the result.

When I started this I also drew the Emperor in the background with his arms raised up to the sky shooting force lightning - as I'd imagined this scene taking place after they'd landed on Mustafar (the volcanic planet) - with him commanding the troops to "find Lord Vader". But... it kind of distracted from the Shock Troopers so I left him out. And I think the piece is better for it.

This is a low-res version of my drawing which I sketched on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and finished on my desktop PC using Photoshop and a Wacom pad. It's an original depiction of George Lucas’s / Disney’s copyright characters – intended solely to show my artistic ability. I’m not a professional – this is fan art – and none of my work is for sale or available for reproduction.

Yeah - they didn't get used enough in the movie (I think they were in two scenes - one in the Senate and one on Mustafar) - but sometimes "less is more" as the old saying goes!

Imagining the Emperor in the background.... Does not fit or appeal very highly, to me. The work, being focused solely on the Shock Troopers, is brilliant enough without a distraction in the background.

The piece itself gives a sense of urgency.

Thanks very much for your considered comment Steven - it made me feel much better about deciding to leave out the Emperor from the background (and sorry for taking to long to reply)!

The delay is quite alright. I honestly doubted a reply, seeing as someone with this talent is usually too busy to comment much. You are very welcome for my comment, and it pleases me to see that someone thinks my opinion matters (seriously, it means quite a bit).

As a side note, I'd prefer it if you used my username or simply Synx when referring to me rather than my actual name. I don't know why, but it bothers me when people use my actual name.

Always loved these guys' colouring. Suits the elite feel they are intended to give off.

I agree. To be honest - I was never that keen on the multiple colour schemes for the numerous clones. I always had a nagging feeling that it was just a way to sell more toys using the same mould!

In my opinion the storm's (Storm-trooper that is.) are the best ones. These guys are still good.

In a Clone Wars episode where Obi-Wan does an undercover assignment, several inmates start a prison riot and attack these guys so one of them says "Turn your weapons off stun! Kill the prisoners if you have to!"

That sounds like a more dark play on "There's one! Set for stun!" (or however that line went) from Episode IV.

Very interesting - and very fitting for these guys - as I guess they must be the baddest of the bad to be assigned personally to the Emperor! I haven't seen that episode - do you know which season it's from?

Wow! This piece definitely showcases your talent! I support your choice to leave the Emperor out -- I think having the troops along amid the flames is more powerful. Love the highlights from the fire, too. Great job!

Thanks Kelly :) - and for taking the time to read my description of this - you're the only person so far to comment on my decision to leave the Emperor out! And I'm glad you agree (he would have distracted from the effect of the troops)! I guess for every piece of finished work on here (your's, mine or anyone else's) there's always a series of choices that lead to the final piece!

Thanks as always Simon. This is just a simple piece - content wise - so I put the most effort into the paint job and layout. Sometimes when I see this 'type' of digital painting I think people tend to over emphasize the light sources and I always wonder where the artist thinks the remarkable shades are coming from. But having a volcano going off in the background sure helps make it very clear for the viewer why the lighting is like it is! :)

No worries mate.
You are right some people do get a bit gung ho about lighting when sometimes keeping it simple works the best.

Volcanos always work for me though. :D

Great job! I always thought they looked very scary & intimidating in thier Phase 2 helmets and paint job. In thier Phase 1 look, they looked more regal and more welcoming.

Very interesting thought. I think the design of the Phase 1 reflected that they were trying to make them look a little like Jango/Boba Fett - and as they progress they get closer and closer to the Stormtrooper helmets. There were a lot of different paint jobs they used on the Phase 2 clones - but I like this one best!

Ah, heh, all cool stuff! Yes, the Phase 1 helmets were designed after the head bucket of Jango Fett and his other fellow Mando mercs. The look was cold and militaristic but w/o any real intimidating facial features.

What I actually was trying to get at about the Phase 2 Shocktroopers was that thier Phase 1 Coruscant Guard "maroon" paint scheme was more regal.

It was not until their Phase 2 helmets had a more intimdating "blood red" paint scheme that added to the already intimdating skull-like features of the new buckets.

They do look pretty fearsome in both the CW series and in ROTS!

CDR Thire and CDR Fox!

You're right - the red/maroon is very effective. And it shows how important it is to pick the right color. Perhaps the red has 'regal' connotations because we often see it used in royal capes or in soldiers' ceremonial outfits. And I agree - Commander Fox is a good example of the color scheme being used very effectively!
