Star Wars - X-Wing Squadron Indigo by Robert-Shane Star Wars - X-Wing Squadron Indigo by Robert-Shane
As a big fan of Star Wars, I'm also a big fan of the UK's Star Wars fan site: ‘Jedi News’. Mark Newbold from the site had the concept for a crack team of X-Wing pilots/Commandos - called 'Squadron Indigo'. I thought the idea was a cool one - so I agreed to illustrate what the group might look like and here's the result...

Mark wanted the picture to show 16 characters and described their general types which I then developed for this group shot. With so many characters it could easily have looked too crowded and confusing - so I set the group in a 'realistic' and relaxed situation by having them pose for an imagined photo.

I placed core characters at the front and depicted most of them without their helmets on so that we can see what they look like. The less important characters are placed in the background and are drawn in less detail. Most of these are new characters - with the exception of Janson who was seen in a Snow Speeder in the Empire Strikes Back (he's the one in orange).

As an added challenge - Mark's brief also required that I show the characters in a hangar - with an X-Wing and A-Wing fighter in the background showing the 'indigo' coloring of the squadron. As if that wasn't enough to cram into one picture - I decided to add in the rebel transport speeder - to add some variety to the image. This was never going to be a particularly 'dynamic' image - its purpose is to show a group of characters - not a battle or any other action - but it was a real challenge and I think the end result does what it needs to.

This is a low-res version – drawn in Photoshop using a Wacom pad. It's fan art intended solely to show my artistic ability. I’m not a professional and the image isn’t for sale or available for reproduction.

Crack team consisting of pilots from across the galaxy, including multiple species... Not a single black person in the hangar.

Hi Beowulf, Mark from Jedi News here. Robert did this amazing artwork based on my character descriptions.
You make a VERY fair point, there are no black people in this group of pilots. That's not by design, in the same way that the group isn't intended to be as female heavy as it is. The stories these characters are from have devloped over 30+ years and this is just a snapshot of the squadron around 9 years after Yavin. Prior to this and afterwards there certainly are black crew members, and as this story progresses and team members are lost there will be black pilots coming into the team.
But I'm glad you picked up on that, just wanted to make it clear there's no 'design' of mine behind your observation, and it wans't something I agve a huge amount of thought to (not until you astutely picked it up).
Stay tuned, there will be plenty more to come from Squadron Indigo.

These aren't my characters and I don't know about their history or why this particular group are assembled - although I do know that their membership changes - so the mix might be different at a different time.

As a professional yourself - you'll understand that you draw what your client wants... I'm not a professional - but I am just trying to demonstrate with this that I can do what's asked of me and to a high standard.

Interesting. The lady to the left of Janson reminds me of a certain Leia- the one with the bob type hair cut. The blonde haired lady reminds me of Sarah from the Virtua Fighter game series. Oh, well. By the way, I totally dig the indigo colour- I never did like the orange colour of the original suits.
